The significance of the land in The Last Exile,by Lamine Saidi, the novelist
The land has a crucial function in the novel, The Last Exile. It basically drives all the events and characters allegory.Indeed, the novel begins with Warda, the main character in the town, then she immediately moves to the desert to meet Al -Nour,a cognitive character who is meant to be at the core of all events by Lamine Saidi since Al-Nour stands for freedom, equality, justice and human rights…He also denotes the mind of the cultured wise man and the lover of the globe, land and human being… The setting is interrelated to the character as Al -Nour who shifts from the desert to town and vice versa seeking to reform the world and honor the oppressed everywhere ..
The land in The Last Exile has neither borders nor horizons. It is entirely for humanity, ethics and thoughts…In fact Al-Nour moves to the town which is more populated than the desert just to radically reform the minds of the ruler, his relatives and friends, guards and all the citizens…His objective is also to assure that scholars shall be given a leading function in the town as they are worthy it …
Warda accompanies Al-Nour in the roads, streets and alleys where people inquire him about religion, wise ruling and the ways to attain it.Others ask him about farming, causes of the fields rot, decrease in crops, and the horrible impacts of chemicals and fertilizers in fruit and vegetables on people’s health. While Al -Nour gets such questions with no instant reply since he links every query to setting, street , road, palace, desert or way leading to town. Then ,he gives them practical replies unlike some so-called scholars in some countries who give theoretical responses…
Thus, the novelist in The Last Exile metaphorically correlates the land to events, characters, common interests and unity of the world for universal welfare…The land therefore is the cire of the globe and stimulus to life where all the conflicts occur shifting from peace to war and vise versa…
